This project is part of a quarter long collaboration with the Food Styling class. Students will have four Thursday shoots with the Food Styling Class; three group shoots and one solo shoot. Students will sign up for their solo shoot at the beginning of the quarter – a tentative schedule is included below.

Shoots will be in the culinary area, you will have access to a Location Lighting kit, and the Food Styling students will provide all food and props. Professional quality work is expected. Be courteous, collaborate, and take direction.
Turn in a CD for each of the 4 shoots. Include as many of your images as you can fit. Make JPGs of the best shots for each plate or food item. Keep a record of chef you worked with and the exact name of the dish.
Due Thursdays following shoots. You may need to make a separate copy for the Food Styling class.
For this assignment you will produce a set of photographs consistent with the selected music. The goal is to create a series of images that could be used in a folded paper 4 Panel CD Wallet.
Shoot 4 images to visually complement the selected music. One image will be the Front Cover and the 3 others will be used as design elements on the Back and Interior covers. Remember to shoot for the square format and frame loosely to accommodate the bleeds.
Crop and Size the 4 images to be approx. 5” x 5” with ¼” bleeds. It is optional/ not required to design the cover including typography, layout, post-production, etc... Images must be a minimum of 360 PPI.
Print the 4 images in full color at 5” x 5” with ¼” bleeds.
Turn in your color prints with a CD with as many of your preliminary images as you can fit.

Using the cover of an actual magazine as a template students will shoot a photograph appropriate for the layout. Typeface and positioning must be identical. You can scan in the cover and remove the original imagery or recreate the cover from scratch.
Find a magazine you would like to shoot for in the future. Examine it's cover's standard layout. Determine the common themes, subjects, colors, text/blurb usage,size, etc...
Create a template that matches your chosen magazine's the layout. The typeface and positioning must be identical. You may scan in the cover and remove the original imagery or recreate the cover from scratch using InDesign, Illustrator, or Photoshop.
Shoot an image, it can be from one of your Food Photography Shoots, that matches the established layout.
Turn in a CD with 4 documents saved as jpgs and psd when appropriate:

Sign up sheet is at the studio- The times listed are times that the photographers will be TAKING PICTURES- all styling and preparation needs to be done BEFOREHAND. Fashion students are responsible for providing model. Fashion students are also0 responsible for styling and makeup- We suggest arriving an hour before shoot time to ensure model is ready for shoot.

For this assignment you will be finding and analyzing a successful campaign that utilizes photography (at least three separate images.) Advertising, Fashion or other photo spreads, even music videos can be your study campaign. You will find a set of images and analysis their techniques and characteristics.

Combine images, information (art director's, photographer's, and client's name, and description of the product/subject and markets) and characteristics in a typed document. The document must be 3+ pages and all images must be in color.

Pick one of the following scenarios. Scout a real world location that will suit the image You will need to collect images, contacts, permit samples, and other important information.

SmartCar Ad – Fun Urban Street
Magazine Feature on First Dates – Outdoor Cafe
Scout at least 2 different locations. Think about the client and the market; review related campaigns.
Collect at least 3 photos of your location. Look for the best angles; note the direction and time of day.
Record the following information:
Aesthetics
Does the location suit the production? The overall aesthetic?
Is it possible to frame the shot within the space?
Does the location have the right style? Clean, Dirty, Urban, Rural, Elegant, Shabby, etc...
Logistics
Distance from base of operations, other locations scheduled, rentals, stores, etc..?
What is the availability of electrical power? Bathrooms and/or running water?
Will you need Police or other security?
Where can you park the vehicles so they wont be in shot?
Where you can and can not put gaffer tape? What are the other rules and regulations?
How will you be able to deal with sun, rain, cold, humidity and other weather conditions?
Lighting
Describe the Available light and/or Daylight
Where is the sun relative to the scene? In which direction do the windows face? During which hours of the day do you get direct sunlight through the windows?
Will you be able to color correct the lighting? Can you swap out the fluorescent tubes for color-corrected tubes? Can you clean the windows?
Legal issues/Permissions
Who own or manages the property? Can you get permission from and cooperation of location owner as well as neighbors, local government and/or law enforcement?
What government permits are need for one day of shooting? Include Permit Application.
What is the appropriate insurance amount? This is often need for Permits.
Budgeting
How much will it cost to rent the location for a 4 hour block? All day?
Compile your information and photographs into a location document. Include Permit Application.

Choose one of the scenarios from the location project or create you own new scenario. In this project you will be creating a budget and setting a price for a photographs.

Evaluate your scenario to determine overall logistics including: length of shoot, equipment needs, etc..
Assume your image will run as a half page in a magazine with a circulation or 10,000 to 50,000.
Utilize the budgeting and pricing resources in the class handout and on the course website (http://sarahwichlacz.com/courses/P305/resources.php) to create a budget and estimate a price. Use the categories below to help you spec out your costs. Use a rental chart from a local company.

This will be the Proposal for the Self-Directed Final. The idea, location, budget, and specifications outlined here will become the final project parameters. Students may work in groups, but a higher level of development and larger project scope is required.
Introduce the concept in 2-3 paragraphs. Try to be clear, concise, and visual with your language. The goal is to sell the idea. What are the goals? Scope? Process? Market?
Give at least 3 visual examples to explain the concept; these could be inspiration, sketches, lighting diagrams, lighting, color or posing tests, etc...
Scout at least two potential locations – record information about your locations using methods from the Location Scouting assignment.
Budget as if this was a real project. Estimate the budget using methods from the Budgeting assignment.
Spec out the details: how will will the images be delivered, what are the final dimensions, resolution, due date, etc... Use the methods from the Shooting to Spec assignment.
Collect this information in a clean, clear, and professional document.
Submit your Proposal document for final approval.
