The Internship Program at The Art Institute of Washington is designed to augment classroom training by exposing students to practical work environments while maintaining an educational focus. Internships introduce students to a “hands-on” work experience in a controlled, supervised environment. The primary goal of this experience is to observe and participate in the operation of a successful business establishment.
Prerequisites
By Approval of the professors and department chairs.
Students can become eligible to take the Internship Course in their seventh quarter of study at The Art Institute of Washington. Transfer students seeking to take the Internship Course sooner must obtain permission from their Academic Director. It is strongly recommended that students wait until at least their seventh quarter before registering for the Internship Course.
Any student registering for the Internship Course as an elective must have a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.7 or above. For students required to take the Internship Course, GPA is not taken into consideration.
Students seeking an internship for academic credit must have an appropriate resume and cover letter approved by the Career Services Department. It is strongly suggested that students consult with a faculty member for review of their work samples before applying for an internship.
Application
Students seeking an internship must obtain Internship Course application materials from the Career Services Department. The application must be completed and signed by both the student and the internship sponsor. It include:
A job description and objectives for the internship. This description should include specific projects to be completed during the course of the internship.
Contact information for the internship supervisor.
A weekly schedule.
An acknowledgement form to be signed by the student and the internship supervisor stating that each party understands and agrees to abide by internship policies and procedures set forth by The Art Institute of Washington.
Student Responsibilities
Identify a suitable internship sponsor. The Career Services Department maintains a list of acceptable internships each quarter. Students may seek assistance from Career Services, or they may research internship opportunities on their own. Students should carefully review the requirements for internship sponsors to ensure that their chosen organization qualifies to participate in The Art Institute of Washington’s Internship Program.
Schedule an interview with the internship sponsor.
Once an offer has been extended, it is the student’s responsibility to provide the sponsor with the appropriate internship paperwork. A completed internship application must be approved by the student’s Academic Director and submitted to the Career Services Department before the student can register for the Internship Course. The student must register prior to the Add/Drop deadline- NO EXCEPTIONS!
Follow all course requirements as set forth by the student’s Academic Director.
Communicate mid-term and final evaluation deadlines to the internship supervisor and ensure that all paperwork is submitted to the Academic Director in a timely manner.
