Shoot 1 - Field Lighting

For this assignment you will be shooting on location. The goal is to find a newsworthy subject to photograph with efficient artificial portable lighting. Lighting should be provided by a flash or simple strobe set up. Images should exhibit effective use of a compact lighting setup in a night or indoor location.

 

Shoot as many images as necessary (at least 40.) Shoot RAWs at a minimum of 2400 x 3000 pixels. Experiment with diffusion, bounce, mixture with available light, shutter speed, etc... Select your 3 best examples. Write a short paragraph describing the scene; express what is newsworthy about the shots.

 

Turn in a CD/web gallery with the 3 image files as clearly labeled jpgs or tifs. Include the 40+ RAW files in a separate folder. Include your descriptive paragraph as a text document.

 

Shoot 2 - Action

For this assignment you will be shooting a journalistic series highlighting motion. You may want to freeze, bur, or use a combination of motion.

 

Shoot as many images as necessary (at least 40.) Shoot RAWs at a minimum of 2400 x 3000 pixels. Select your 3 best examples. Write a short paragraph describing the scenes.


Turn in a CD with the 3 image files as clearly labeled jpgs or tifs. Include the 40+ RAW files in a separate folder. Include your descriptive paragraph as a text document.

 

Shoot 3 - Captioned Story

For this assignment you will be shooting a series of photographs that rely on captions for depth and meaning.

Shoot as many images as necessary (at least 50.) Shoot RAWs at a minimum of 2400 x 3000 pixels. Select and polish your 3-5 best shots.

 

Write a set of carefully crafted captions. Captions should include Who, What, Where, When (Why and How are optional.) Captions should help to conceptualize and add depth to the photos.

 

Turn in a CD/web gallery with the 3-5 image files as clearly labeled jpgs or tifs. Include the 40+ RAW files in a separate folder. Include your captions as a text document.

 

Shoot 4 - Night Location

For this assignment you will be shooting a series of photographs that are shot at or after sunset. The images should take advantage of available light when possible. The photographs should work together as a series that explores an after dark event, location, person, etc...

 

Shoot as many images as necessary (at least 50.) Shoot RAWs at a minimum of 2400 x 3000 pixels. Select your 3-5 best examples.

 

Write a set of carefully crafted captions. Captions should include Who, What, Where, When (Why and How are optional.)

Shoot 5- Historical/Global Angle

For this assignment you will be shooting a series of photographs that explore the local connections to a global issue OR the current ramification of a historical event. Choose your subjects and locations carefully, they must represent distant places or time periods. There must be a journalistic slant to your exploration

Shoot as many images as necessary (at least 50.) Shoot RAWs at a minimum of 2400 x 3000 pixels. Select your 3-5 best examples. Write a short paragraph describing the series. Clearly express what is newsworthy about the shots and explicitly address the global or historical connections.

Turn in a CD/web gallery with the 3-5 image files as clearly labeled jpgs or tifs. Include the 40+ RAW files in a separate folder. Include your descriptive paragraph as a text document.

 

Research

For this assignment you will be researching a topic in anticipation of doing your final in depth story. This research should provide you with Locations, People and Events for your photographic series as well as the background information needed to make informed decisions about your shoots, captions, etc...

 

Select a newsworthy topic. The topic should not be too broad – try to choose a local or specific angle on a large subject. For example the Iraq War is too broad; but there are many local connections to the conflict such as: veterans, families of deployed troops, local national guard readiness, anti war movement, pro war movement, immigrants, trade connections, etc...

 

Research your chosen topic using the local news media, libraries, the internet, etc... The best research is from primary sources: documents, interviews, newspapers, etc...

 

Find a set of potential leads for your final in depth story. 3+ Locations with specific addresses/ maps and descriptions. 3+ People with contact information and descriptions. 2+ Events with dates, location, and description.

Type at least a 2 full pages (double spaced, 12pt font – standard margins) outlining your chosen topic and research. First Describe your topic; give context and detail. Then Present your research including the Locations, People, and Events. Finally Propose at least 3 different shoots for the final photo story.

 

Report

For this assignment you will be researching a photo agency (Magnum or Black Star for example) or photo outlet specializing in photojournalism (New York Times or Time Magazine for example).

 

Select an important photo agency or photo outlet specializing in photojournalism.

 

Research your chosen agency or outlet. What type of photojournalists do they work with; who are some of them? What type of stories do they cover?

 

Write a 2-3 page report describing the agency and it's place within the photographic community. 12pt font, normal margins, double spaced. Use photographic examples

 

Final Story

For this assignment you will be shooting the story you've proposed in your prior Research.


Take your earlier Research document: Type at least a 2 full pages (double spaced, 12pt font – standard margins) outlining your chosen topic and research. First Describe your topic; give context and detail. Then Present your research including the Locations, People, and Events. Finally Propose at least 3 different shoots for the final photo series.

 

Shoot at least two of the 3 proposed photo shoots, taking as many images as necessary. Shoot RAWs at a minimum of 2400 x 3000 pixels.

Create a crafted series of 7 to 15 images. Think about sequencing.

Write captions for your images. Use AP style for your typed captions.

 

Turn in a CD with series of image as clearly labeled jpgs or pdfs. Include your captions as a text document and within the files' meta data. Also include the unused RAW files in a separate folder.

 

Weeklies

Each week you will be shooting on a predetermined topic:

  1. Humor

  2. The Arts – Art, Poetry, Music

  3. History – Museums, Historical Location, Etc..

  4. Children or Teens

  5. Springtime

  6. Emotion

  7. Local Interest

  8. Local View on a National/International Topic

  9. Drugs/Medical

  10. Education/Politics

 

Shoot the your images as RAWs at approximately - 300 ppi (2400 x 3000 pixels.)

 

Turn in a CD/web gallery with the 3 top image files for each catagory as clearly labeled jpgs.

Due Friday of each week

 

Portfolio

For your portfolio you will need to choose your 15-25 strongest images from the class. Out of these images you will make 10-15 prints. You must include a series/set of at least 3 photos.


Select and Polish the 15-25 strongest images. You may want to make minor adjustments the images in PhotoShop. Final images DO NOT need be cropped to 8” x 10” but must be approx 300 ppi.

 

Turn your images in as all TIFs or all JPGs on a closed CD. Your CD must be in a CD case. Make sure to include your full name and email address on a custom CD cover.

 

Print 10-15 of your strongest images at approximately 8” x 10” at 300 ppi or larger.


Present your prints in your portfolio book with written captions or statements. Include the labeled CD.
