Assignment 1 Compostion and Angles

For this assignment you will be creating four pairs of images.

 

In the first pair of images use the same scene and subject . One of these images must have a symmetrical composition and the other should have an asymmetrical composition.

 

In the second pair of images use the same scene and subject. In one of the images the subject should fill the frame and in the other the subject should only occupy part of the frame.

 

In the third pair of images use the same scene and subject. One of the images must have a wide depth of field and the other should have a shallow depth of field.

 

In the fourth pair of images use the same scene and subject. One of the images must have an extreme low angle and the other should have an extreme high angle.

 

Try to make your images look and feel radically different from one another.
  
Shoot your scenes and subjects in a variety of ways (30+ RAW files per pair) keep shooting until you are sure you have created a refined pair of images for each set. You may want to try a number different scenes and subjects, but it’s fine to concentrate on one. Creating and printing contact sheets in Photoshop will aid you in selecting your final shots (contact sheets are NOT required for this assignment.)

 

Select and Refine four image sets – symmetrical and asymmetrical composition, fill the frame and leave space in the frame, high and low depth of field & extremehigh and extreme low angle. You may want to adjust or retouch the images in Photoshop. Final images should be approximately 8” x 10” at 300 ppi.

 

Turn in a DVD that includes two folders; one named RAWS with your 120+ preliminary shots. The other named FINAL should include your final pairs as clearly labeled as JPGs.

 

Assignment 2 Inspiration

For this assignment you will find a source of inspiration; this could be a painting, movie, song, etc... Using this inspiration you will create 3-4 photographs. You can get ideas from the subject matter, concept, composition, mood, etc... You don't need to exactly match your inspiration.

 

Select a source of inspiration. Pick something classic and recognizable.

 

Shoot your scene and subjects in a variety of ways (120+ RAW files) keep shooting until you are sure you have created a set of refined images. Creating and printing contact sheets will aid you in selecting your final shots (contact sheets are NOT required for this assignment.)

Presentation on a Photograph

For this assignment you will be choosing a photograph and presenting it to the class.

 

Select a photograph taken by a “famous” photographer. Make sure you can find some information on the photograph and photographer. You will need to find at least one legitimate source – printed material is best, critically analyze any internet source. Get a digital copy of the image (scan if you need to;) you'll use it in your presentation - make sure it looks good.

 

Type at least a 2 full pages (double spaced, 12pt font – standard margins) of lecture notes about the image. Use quotes if possible and include citations to your sources. Think about the 7 critique steps: describe form, describe medium, describe, style, compare and contrast, internal or external information sources, interpretation, and evaluation.

 

Present your the image to the class. Presentations should take 3-5 minutes. Your notes should outline your points. Make sure to practice – run through at least once to get your timing right.

 

Turn in a print of your chosen image and your lecture notes.

 

Assignment 3 Color Scheme

For this assignment you will choosing a color scheme and shooting a series of images in that scheme. Printing contact sheets will help you evaluate your compositions and color schemes. You will be printing your most successful image.

 

Pick a monochromatic, warm, cool, or two color color scheme; for example you could pick monochromatic blue or a cool scheme or blue and orange set. This is something you should settle on before shooting

 

Shoot 120+ shots with your chosen color scheme. You may want to try a few different scenes and subjects, but it is fine to concentrate on one. Creating and printing contact sheets in PhotoShop will aid you in selecting your final shots (contact sheets ARE required for this assignment.)

 

Select and Polish your strongest image. You may want to subtlety adjust or retouch the image in PhotoShop. Final images should be cropped to 8” x 10” at approximately 300 ppi.

 

Print your contact sheets and your most successful image in full color at approximately 8” x 10.” Print quality matters so make sure to get a good that shows off your color scheme.

 

Turn your contacts and print in to me in a clearly labeled manila envelope.

 

Assignment 4 Formal Issues

For this assignment you will be creating a set of 3 images that all utilize the same approximate formal characteristics. Your formal elements will be assigned in class.

 

Shoot a set of images that follows your formal criteria. Creating and printing contact sheets in Photoshop will aid you in selecting your final shots (contact sheets ARE required for this assignment.)

 

Select and Polish 3 images. You may want to adjust or retouch the image in Photoshop. Make sure you clearly label these files on your disk. Final images should be cropped to 8” x 10” or larger at approximately 300 ppi.

 

Print a set of contact sheets AND your three most successful images in full color at approx. 8” x 10” or larger.

 

Create a single paragraph that explains the formal issue you are exploring.

 

Turn your paragraph, contact sheets, and prints in to me in a clearly labeled manila envelope.

 

Essay and Presentation on a Photographer

For this assignment you will be choosing a photographer, writing a short paper, and presenting it to the class.

Select an important photographer. Make sure you can find printed information. You will need two or more legitimate sources – only one can be an internet source (critically analyze any webpage.)

 

Type an essay, 3-5 full pages (double spaced, 12pt font – standard margins.) Focus on the photographer's work NOT their biography. Use at least one quote; be sure to cite your sources. You might want to discuss a few of the photographer's key images – include a print of any images you specifically discuss in the back of the paper. Keep a bibliography (MLA style.)


Present your paper to the class. Presentations should take 5-7 minutes. You should make notes that outline your points. Make sure to practice – run through at least once to get your timing right.


Turn in a copy of your lecture notes after your presentation. Turn in your a copy of your paper including a bibliography and copies of any images discussed.

 

Assignment 5 Conceptual Issues

For this assignment you will be creating a set of 3 images that all utilize the same conceptual characteristics.


Choose a set of conceptual issues you want to concentrate on. Pick one or more issue.


Shoot a set of images that follow a set of conceptual criteria. Creating and printing contact sheets in PhotoShop will aid you in selecting your final shots (contact sheets ARE required for this assignment.)


Select and Polish 3 images. You may want to adjust or retouch the image in PhotoShop. Make sure you clearly label these files on your contact sheets. Final images should be approximately 8” x 10” or larger at a minimum of 300 ppi.


Print a set of contact sheets and your most successful image in full color at approximately 8” x 10” or larger.


Type a single paragraph that explains the conceptual issue you are exploring.


Turn in your contact sheets, paragraph, and printed image in a manila envelope

Shoot as many images as you needed in order to get a strong representation for each image type.

Name your file with the category and shot name (for example tough_wild animal or more_taxi) The image should be saved as high resolution jpgs.

 

Turn in 10 images a week each Thursday. Keep a folder with your complete image collection on a portable thumbdrive.

 

Final Project - Photographic Series

For the final project in this this course you will be creating a photographic series of your choice.

 

Shoot at least 80 images for your series.


Select and Polish your 5-10 strongest images. You may want to adjust or retouch the images in Photoshop. Final images should be cropped to 8” x 10” at approximately 300 ppi.

 

Print your 3 images at 8” x 10” -- full color, high quality. Print contract sheets of all your preliminary shots.

 

Mat your 3 strongest print in the 8” x 10” window in an 11” x 14” mat. Use white or black 4 ply mat board to make a centered window mat (you can use any ply mat for the back mat.) Use photo corners place your image and cloth or archival tape to hinge the window

 

Type a statement about your series

 

Turn in your three printed and matted images, contact sheets, and typed statement.

 

Portfolio

For your portfolio you will need to choose your ten to fifteen strongest images from the class; the images must be shot this quarter, but don't need to have been used in an assignment.

 

Select and Polish 10 to 15 strongest images. You may want to make minor adjusts or retouch the images in PhotoShop. Final images DO NOT need be cropped to 8” x 10” but must be approx 300 ppi.

 

Turn your images in as JPGs on a closed CD. Your CD must be in a CD case and make sure to include your full name and email address.
