Paper Proposal

For this class you will be writing a paper on a photographic topic of your own choice. You need to propose a topic and get my approval before writing your paper.

  1. What is your topic? (Write one to two sentences describing your topic, to help you define it precisely.)

  2. Does your topic relate to issues we’ve covered in class, how?

  3. What resources did you find for your topic? (Check for print resources at school and public libraries) If you find too little/much information, broaden/narrow your topic. List at least two sources – only one may be from the internet.

Submit a typed page answer the questions above.

Paper and Presentation

For this class you will be writing a paper on a photographic topic of your own choice. You needed to propose a topic and get my approval before writing this paper. In this paper I want you to show research on your topic, make a statement or draw a conclusion, and apply what you have learned in the course.

Research your topic. You will need three or more legitimate sources – only one can be an internet source (critically analyze any webpage.) Compile a bibliography MLA style.

Write a 5-10 page paper exploring your topic. 12pt font, normal margins, double spaced. Use quotes and make sure to cite them properly.

Present a 3-4 minute summery of your paper to the class. Remember to contextualize your topic within the course. Use notes and at least one visual example. Practice so you do not run long or short. If I talked about your topic in class make sure you are giving new information.

Submit your typed and stabled essay to me on the last day of class. Include you bibliography and copies of any images you specifically address.

Extra Credit *Not Available Until Midterm

For extra credit you may visit a local museum/gallery and write a short description and evaluation of a “famous” photographic print. The National Portrait Gallery is a great place to start.

Locate a “famous” photograph – for this assignment famous is defined as someone featured in our photography book. Let me know where you plan on visiting before you submit your write-up.

Write a single page essay describing and evaluating your chosen photographic print. Use the book to add details and information. Try to make connections to the ideas presented in class. Make sure to give the artist's name, the image's title, the date it was created, and the place and time you saw the work.

Submit your typed page and a program or other item. You may only turn in one photographic write-up a week until the final week of class.
