Assignment 1 Learning the Camera

For this first assignment you will be learning the basic functions of the camera.

 

Shoot the following image sets as jpgs at approximately - 300 ppi (2400 x 3000 pixels.) NO FLASH

 

Aperture - play with depth of field. Take two images, the first with a very low f-stop and the second (same scene/focus/camera position) with a very high f-stop. Make sure to compensate with the shutter speed.

Shutter- play with movement. Take two images of the same moving object, the first with a low shutter speed and the second with a high shutter speed. Make sure to compensate with the aperture.

Lighting - play with light. Take two images of the same object/person in very different light types. (You may use flash on ONE of the 2 lighting images.)

Turn in a single session CD with the 6 image files clearly labeled (aperture_wide, aperture_shallow, etc...)

Assignment 2 The Century

For this assignment you will be picking a single object or object type to photograph 100 to 200 times. The goal is to stretch your imagination to find unique viewpoints, interesting lighting, and new ways of seeing the world around you.

 

Pick an object on which to concentrate. This could be a single object, for example a pair of shoes, or an object type that can be found in many places, like a stop sign. A single object like a wine glass could be photographed in many locations, in different lights, and with many different angles. OR an object type – maybe a simple wooden chair— could be found and photographed in many different places with subtle differences in colors, textures, etc..

 

Shoot 100 to 200 images of ONE object or object type.

 

Create contact sheets of all of your images.

 

Print your contact sheets- for this assignment you may print in black and white.

 

Turn in a “closed session” CD with as many of your images as you can fit. Clearly label your best three images on disk and on the contact sheets. Include your printed contact sheets with the CD.

Assignment 3 Textures

For this assignment you will be exploring texture in photography. You should also remember the fundamentals of exposure (aperture and shutter) and the basic principles of composition: subject, focal point/s, rule of thirds, unity (group/pattern,) and balance (symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial.)

 

Shoot at least 40 images. You might want to bracket your shots.

 

Select and Polish 4 images with strong compositions. You may want to adjust or retouch the image in PhotoShop. Final images can be cropped to 8” x 10” at approximately 300 ppi or left uncropped at approximately 300 ppi.

 

Turn in a “closed session” CD with your 4 texture shots as clearly labeled TIF or PSD files. Also include your 40+ preliminary shots (TIFs or JPGS are fine) in another clearly labeled folder on your CD.

 

Due Monday, February 28, 2008.

 

Assignment 4 Color

For this assignment you will be exploring color in photography. You should also remember the fundamentals of exposure (aperture and shutter,) the basic principles of composition: subject, focal point/s, rule of thirds, unity (group/pattern,) and balance (symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial) as well as the ideas of basic lighting (diffuse and direct) and texture.

 

Shoot at least 40 images. Make sure to look for color complements/contrasts as well as monochromatic compositions. You might want to bracket your shots.

 

Select and Polish 4 images with strong compositions (2 color contrast shots and 2 monochromatic shots.) You may want to adjust or retouch the image in PhotoShop. Final images should be cropped to 8” x 10” at approximately 300 ppi.

 

Turn in a “closed session” CD with your 4 complementary and monochromatic shots as clearly labeled files. Also include your 40+ preliminary shots in another clearly labeled folder on your CD.

 

Due Monday, February 11th, 2008.

 

Assignment 5 Motion

For this assignment you will be exploring motion in photography. You should also remember the fundamentals of exposure (aperture and shutter,) the basic principles of composition: subject, focal point/s, rule of thirds, unity (group/pattern,) and balance (symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial) as well as the ideas of basic lighting (diffuse and direct,) texture, and color (complementary and monochromatic.)

 

Shoot at least 40 images. Decide on a single topic or theme on which to focus.

 

Select and Polish your 4 strongest images. You might want to show these as a series. You may want to adjust or retouch the image in PhotoShop. Final images should be cropped to 8” x 10” at approximately 300 ppi.

 

Turn in a “closed session” CD with your 4 shots as clearly labeled as TIF or PSD files. Also include your 40+ preliminary shots (TIFs or JPGS are fine) in another clearly labeled folder on your CD.

 

Due Monday, February 18th, 2008.

 

Assignment 6 Self Portrait/Portrait

For this assignment you will be photographing people. You should remember the fundamentals of exposure (aperture and shutter,) the basic principles of composition: subject, focal point/s, rule of thirds, unity (group/pattern,) and balance (symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial) as well as the ideas of basic lighting (diffuse and direct,) texture, negative space, color (complementary and monochromatic,) and motion.

 

Shoot at least 20 images of a single person and at least 20 images of yourself (a tripod and/or timer setting is required for some of these shots.)

 

Select and Polish your 3 strongest images: one must be a portrait and one a self portrait. You may want to adjust or retouch the images in Photoshop. Final images should be cropped to 8” x 10” at approximately 300 ppi.

Print your most successful image in full color at approximately 8” x 10” or larger.

 

Turn in a “closed session” CD with your 4 shots as clearly labeled as TIF or PSD files. Also include your 40+ preliminary shots (TIFs or JPGS are fine) in another clearly labeled folder on your CD.

 

Due Monday, February 25th, 2008.

 

Assignment 7 Altered Photo

For this assignment you will take a photograph and alter it in some way. You should remember the fundamentals of exposure (aperture and shutter,) the basic principles of composition: subject, focal point/s, rule of thirds, unity (group/pattern,) and balance (symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial) as well as the ideas of basic lighting (diffuse and direct,) texture, color (complementary and monochromatic,) motion, and portraiture.

 

Shoot at least 40 images. Create and print contact sheets.

 

Select and Alter a photograph in some way. You could use PhotoShop, pen and ink, paint, collage, etc; let your imagination run wild.

 

Turn in the final 8” x 10” print version of your altered photograph and your contact sheets.

 

Due Monday, March 10th, 2008.

 

Final Project

For the final project in this this course you will create a photographic project of your choice that relates to your major in school. For example: a graphic design student may want to create a poster series, an interior design student may want to photograph a series of dining rooms, a DMP major could create video using still images or photo storyboard, etc...) You should remember the fundamentals of exposure (aperture and shutter,) the basic principles of composition: subject, focal point/s, rule of thirds, unity (group/pattern,) and balance (symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial) as well as the ideas of basic lighting (diffuse and direct,) texture, color (complementary and monochromatic,) motion, time, portrait, and Photoshop techniques.

 

Shoot at least 80 images for your project.

 

Select and Polish/Finish your 3+ strongest images. You may want to create, adjust, or retouch the images in PhotoShop. Final images should be approximately 8” x 10” at 300 ppi.

 

Print at least 3 images at approximately 8” x 10” or larger-- full color, high quality. Print contract sheets of all your preliminary shots.

Present your prints in a way fitting your major (black presentation board, matted, presentation binder, etc...)

 

Type a single paragraph statement about your series.

 

Turn in your 3+ printed images cleanly presented with contact sheets and typed statement.

 

Due Wednesday, March 19th, 2008.

 

Portfolio

For your portfolio you will need to choose your 15-20 strongest images from the class; the images must be shot this quarter, but don't need to have been used in an assignment.

 

Select and Polish the 15-20 strongest images. You may want to make minor adjusts or retouch the images in PhotoShop. Final images DO NOT need be cropped to 8” x 10” but must be approx 300 ppi.

 

Turn your images in as all TIFs or all JPGs on a closed CD. Your CD must be in a CD case and make sure to include your full name and email address. A custom CD cover is optional.

 

Due Wednesday, March 19th, 2008.
