Assignment 1 - Available Light

For this first assignment you will be shooting only in available light. Each of the images should include the same or similar subject (for example you could shoot all portraits or focus on reflective objects.) I’m expecting you to shoot at least 40 images to get a good example for all 6 categories.

 

Shoot the following images as RAWs at approximately - 300 ppi (2400 x 3000 pixels.) NO FLASH

 

Outdoor- Bright

Golden Hour

Indoor with Natural Light

Scene without Reflector

Same Scene with Reflector

 

Turn in a “closed session” CD with the 6 image files clearly labeled (outdoor_bright.jpg, Golden_hour.jpg, etc…) as jpgs or tifs. Include the 40+ RAW files in a separate folder.

Assignment 2 - Flash

For this assignment you will be shooting with a flash. Each of the images should include the same or very similar subject (for example you could shoot all portraits or focus on reflective objects.) You may want to pick a subject/topic you can record in a photojournalist style. I’m expecting you to shoot at least 45 images to get a good example for all 7 categories.

 

Shoot the following images as RAWs at approximately - 300 ppi (2400 x 3000 pixels.) ALL FLASH

Assignment 3 - Materials

For this assignment you will be photographing to reveal characteristics of your subject's surface. Pick a theme to unite the subjects (food and place settings or the natural enviroment for example.) I’m expecting you to shoot at least 45 images to get a good example for all 5 materials. You may use any type of light to accomplish the appropriate surface characteristics.

 

Shoot the following images as RAWs at approximately - 300 ppi (2400 x 3000 pixels.)

Assignment 4 - Arsenal of Lights

For this assignment you will be photographing with different lights and light combination. I’m expecting you to shoot at least 45 images to get a good example for all 5 lights and light combinations. Connect your images thematically; you may use any type of lights to accomplish these shots.

Assignment 5 - Color and Quality

For this assignment you will be photographing with different light colors and light qualities. I’m expecting you to shoot at least 60 images to get a good example for all 5 light and color combinations. Connect your images thematically; you may use any type of lights to accomplish these shots.

 

Shoot the following images as RAWs at approximately - 300 ppi for an 11” X 14” (3300 x 4200 pixels.)

Color Match (this should be a brightly colored object that you can bring to class)

Mixed Light Color

Direct Light

Diffuse Light

Mixed Light Quality

 

Create contact sheets of all of your images.

 

Print your contact sheets- for this assignment you may print in black and white and Print your color match image in full color at approximately 8” x 10” or larger.

 

Turn in a “closed session” CD with the 5 image files clearly labeled as jpgs or tifs. Include the 60+ RAW files in a separate folder. Bring your color match subject to class on the due date. Keep your contact sheets and print in a large manila envelope.

Assignment 6 - Painting with Light

For this assignment you will be “Painting with Light;” I'll let you decide how you want to paint with light; traditionally this means shooting in a very dark environment using a very long shutter speed and moving the light source to create lines. I’m expecting you to shoot at least 70 images to get a 5 good shots. Connect your images thematically. You may use any type of lights to accomplish your shots (flash, flashlight, laser pointer, candle, etc...)

 

Shoot as RAWs at approximately - 300 ppi for an 11” X 14” (3300 x 4200 pixels.)

 

Print your 2 favorite images in full color at approximately 8” x 10” or larger.

 

Turn in a “closed session” CD with the 5 image files clearly labeled as jpgs or tifs. Include the 70+ RAW files in a separate folder. Keep your print in a large manila envelope.

 

Due Thursday, November 15, 2007.

 

Assignment 7 - Studio Inspiration

For this assignment you will be using a photograph as an inspiration for the lighting in a studio shot. By analyzing your inspiration image you will create a lighting diagram; using this diagram you will arrange your studio lights (hot lights or strobes.) You may have to move or alter the lights as you shoot; so you will create a revised lighting diagram to denote the changes. I’m expecting you to shoot at least 70 images to get 5 good shots.

 

Find an photograph as inspiration for your studio lighting. Any image can provide inspiration; but you can always use images from our library's photo texts for lighting.

 

Create a lighting diagram based on the lighting in you inspiration.

 

Shoot as RAWs at approximately - 300 ppi for an 11” X 14” (3300 x 4200 pixels.)

 

Create another lighting diagram noting any adjustments you had to make during the shoot.

 

Print your 3 favorite images in full color at approximately 8” x 10” or larger. Print your original and revised lighting diagrams.

 

Turn in a “closed session” CD with the 3 print files clearly labeled as jpgs or tifs. Include the 70+ RAW files in a separate folder. Keep your lighting diagrams and prints in a large manila envelope.

 

Due Tuesday, December 4, 2007.

 

Final Project

For the final project in this this course you will be creating a photographic project of your choice. The images must be themed and explore advanced lighting techniques.

 

Create a typed project proposal outlining your project's concept and goals. You may want to make a lighting diagram. Due Thursday, November 29, 2007.

 

Shoot at least 80 images for your project.

 

Select and Polish/Finish your 3+ strongest images. You may want to create, adjust, or retouch the images in PhotoShop. Final images should be approximately 8” x 10” at 300 ppi.

Print at least 3 images at approximately 8” x 10” or larger – in full color, high quality. Print contract sheets of all your preliminary shots.

Type a single paragraph statement about your series (this can come in large part from your proposal.)

Present your prints, proposal, statement, and contact sheets in your portfolio book.

Due Tuesday, December 11, 2007.

 

Portfolio

For your portfolio you will need to choose your 15-20 strongest images from the class; the images must be shot this quarter, but don't need to have been used in an assignment. Out of these images you will make 5-7 prints.

Select and Polish the 15-20 strongest images. You may want to make minor adjusts or retouch the images in PhotoShop. Final images DO NOT need be cropped to 8” x 10” but must be approx 300 ppi.

Turn your images in as all TIFs or all JPGs on a closed CD. Your CD must be in a CD case and make sure to include your full name and email address. A custom CD cover is optional.

Print 5-7 of your strongest images at approximately 8” x 10” at 300 ppi or larger.

 

Present your prints in your portfolio book.
